Sticker shock. If you had planned to build a new backyard deck this summer, you — like many Americans — are probably feeling it. High lumber costs equate to higher prices for almost every product made out of wood, including decking. According to Consumer Reports, more than half of all decks built in the U.S. are made of wood.

The TJX Companies Inc., of Framingham, Mass., is recalling about 92,000 folding chairs due to an injury hazard. According to a May 5 recall alert from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Vietnam-made TJX outdoor wooden folding chairs could break, causing the user to fall. TJX has received 18 reports of the chairs breaking or collapsing — 15 of which resulted in falls that caused minor injuries, including neck injuries and cuts.

Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Company Inc., of Mebane, N.C., is recalling more than a quarter-million Kidde TruSense-brand smoke alarms and combination smoke-carbon monoxide alarms. The roughly 226,000 devices included in the May 6 recall alert have a defect that could result in failure to alert households to a fire. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, no incidents or injuries have been reported.

Signature Hardware is recalling hundreds of Pickens Flip Up Towel Grab Bars due to a fall risk that has resulted in more than a dozen incident reports. The recall, announced May 5, affects about 330 towel grab bars in the U.S. and five more in Canada. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the product can break if the towel bar is used to provide bodily support, which could result in a fall and injury.
